Rob Williams and Derek Wood

Rob and Derek are veterans of numerous bands that have spanned many years. The line up of acoustic guitar, electric guitar and vocals, is tight, punchy and ambitious in that they are constantly striving to push back the boundaries of the sounds that are possible with this line up.

About Hungry Bears

Hungry Bears! are Rob Williams and Derek Wood. They met when Rob joined ‘80 Degrees’, an 'originals only' band created by Derek in 2007. The band existed purely to create new music and, as such, provided the opportunity to hone their song writing skills, a facet of their music careers that continues today.

Hungry Bears! started in December 2010 and the first Hungry Bears! album is well underway and will comprise a collection of original songs written and performed by them.

When time allows, Rob appears with Devon based band ‘The Filthy Gorgeous’ and can list bands such as ‘Joey The Lips’ amongst the many he has featured in. His virtuosic and multi-styled guitar playing contributes enormously to the trade-mark Hungry Bears! sound.

Derek provides versatile vocals and an 'energy charged' acoustic guitar style that is the 'engine room' of the Hungry Bears! sound.

Equally, when Derek is not appearing with Hungry Bears!, he performs a solo set consisting of well known, but less often played covers, together with some self-penned songs. He has established himself as a solo act in numerous venues in Devon and Cornwall.

Their ‘slimmed-down’ line up and ambitious sound is demonstrated in the choice of complex, interesting and demanding songs that comprise their repertoire, avoiding the stereotypical ‘pub song book’.

Theirs is most certainly not the 'safe route'.

Hungry Bears! exists to entertain, excite and above all have fun both between themselves and, importantly, with their audience.

FAQs

What Music Do You Play?
‘Hungry Bears!’ play songs from the 60s to the present days taking on some of the ‘rock monsters’ as well as some of the more gentle acoustic songs as the mood demands. Songwriters too, we often include original songs as featured on a 12 track album from their band ’80 Degrees. We are currently recording a new album of original songs under the ‘Hungry Bears!’ banner.
Where Can I See You Play?
We’re a very busy duo and can be found performing most weeks in the South West. See our gig list for all upcoming dates, times and locations.
What is your Typical Gig?
Two hours plus of energy, audience involvement and songs, though well known, probably aren’t played by the majority of duos. HBs produce a big sound for a two piece and choose songs that perhaps are a little unexpected.
What Are Your Technical Requirements?
A space approx 2×3 metres and a power supply

Hungry Bears Band

Hungry Bears Band is an extension of the long-standing Hungry Bears Duo. Rob and Derek have been writing and recording songs for many years, and, in support of the forthcoming Hungry Bears album, they are taking the songs on the road.

In order to produce the new songs live, they have added bass player Rich Jones and drummer Nick Carter.
This is a new project and a departure from the usual show that the Hungry Bears duo delivers.

The new band plays a high proportion of original songs, together with a selection of well-known, but not commonly played covers.

The gig dates can be found on the website with the addition of ‘Full Band’ to indicate the line up.

Rich’s influences are many and varied from funk and jazz to more melodic mainstream pop. His addition to the band creates, with Nick Carter, a driving rhythm section which is the ‘engine room’ of the band.

Both Rich and Nick are contributors to the songs that the band are currently writing, bringing their influences to new material that Hungry Bears play live, and record.
